Our Story

Sungani: To sustain in Nyanja. Sungani works with four women artisans that are single mothers who are the breadwinners of their families. Here at Sungani we work with these women to help supplement their income so they can provide for the families and give them the best chance at life.

Meet the Team

The wonderful artisans that make every single piece from Sungani.

Picture of Mary
  • Mary is the mother of 6 children and a grandmother of 3. She supports all of her grandchildren and also helps support some of her children. At 50 years old she is the oldest artisan as Sungani. Even with children of her own in adulthood, Mary is still the breadwinner in the family. This is also her greatest obstacle as she is a single mother and has to support everyone on her own. Additionally, she only has a 1st grade education and can barely speak english, which hinders her abilities further, but she still works her hardest for herself and most importantly her family. She eventually hopes to get her youngest daughter through university which would be a first for her family.

Picture of Ruth
  • Artisan:

Ruth is actually one of Mary’s daughters and as such she helps her mother in supporting the rest of the family along with her own child Modren. Ruth had a 9th grade education and she learned to weave from her mother Mary. This job gives her the best opportunity that she can with a 9th grade education.

Picture of Sheila
  • Meet Sheila, she is 47 years old and she has 5 children. While she does have a husband he is jobless. This makes Sheila the breadwinner in her family like all the other women here. Besides supporting her own 5 children she helps to support her nieces and nephews. She also has a 9th grade education, so this job gives here a chance at supporting her family that wouldn’t be able to have with her education level.

Picture of Tabitha
  • Tabitha is our in house translator in addition to her management duties that she is working on. She is also the mother of 6 children and is the breadwinner in her family. Through Sungani she is able to develop her other skills such as organising with the other artisans so that they are as self-sufficient as possible.
